Why Outdoor Play Matters More Than You Think (And Why Our Playground Is a Big Deal)

If you’ve ever watched a group of kids the moment they step outside — the way their whole energy shifts, the way they run like they’ve been holding it in all morning — you already understand something that child development experts have been saying for years.

Kids need to move. They need fresh air, open space, and the freedom to just be kids.

At Super Bees Academy in Costa Mesa, our playground isn’t an afterthought. It’s one of the things parents mention first when they come in for a tour, and one of the reasons families keep coming back to us year after year.

“Do They Actually Get Outside Time?”

It’s one of the most common questions we hear from parents — and it’s a good one.

A lot of daycares have a small patch of blacktop and call it a playground. Or they’re so packed with kids that outdoor time feels chaotic and stressful rather than fun and freeing.

We hear you. That’s exactly why we made outdoor space a priority here.

Our playground at Super Bees Academy is large, open, and designed for real play — the kind where kids can run, climb, explore, and burn off that incredible toddler energy. It’s clean, it’s safe, and it’s something the kids genuinely look forward to every single day.

Why the Playground Isn’t Just About Fun

Here’s something worth knowing: outdoor play isn’t just recess. It’s actually one of the most important parts of your child’s development.

When kids play outside, they’re:

  • Building gross motor skills — running, jumping, and climbing develop coordination and strength
  • Learning social skills — sharing the slide, taking turns, negotiating who goes first
  • Managing big emotions — physical activity is one of the best natural tools for emotional regulation
  • Developing confidence — every time a child climbs a little higher or runs a little faster, they learn I can do hard things

And honestly? Kids who get enough outdoor time tend to be calmer, more focused, and more ready to learn when they come back inside.

What Makes Our Playground Feel Different

We’ve had parents tell us they could see the difference from the moment they walked through the gate.

Part of it is the space itself — there’s room to actually move, not just stand in line for equipment.

But a big part of it is the ratio.

At Super Bees Academy, we maintain a 1:8 teacher-to-child ratio — meaning one teacher for every eight children. The state standard for preschool-age kids is 1:12. That might not sound like a huge difference on paper, but out on the playground, it changes everything.

When there are fewer kids per teacher, outdoor time is actually supervised. Kids are seen. Teachers can step in before a small conflict becomes a big one. And parents can feel genuinely at ease knowing their child isn’t just one of a crowd.

A Full Day That’s Worth Something

Playground time is just one part of what we offer, but it fits into a daily routine we’re really proud of.

At Super Bees Academy, your child’s day includes:

  • STEM-based learning activities that make education hands-on and exciting
  • Home-style hot meals — yes, real food, made fresh
  • Outdoor play on our large, open playground
  • Warm, attentive teachers who know your child’s name, their quirks, and their favorite things

We’re open Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, which works well for most working parents in Costa Mesa and the surrounding Orange County area. Our location off the freeway makes the morning drop-off routine a lot less stressful too.

We’re a Family-Owned Center — and It Shows

Super Bees Academy has been part of the Costa Mesa community since 1985. We’re not a franchise. We’re not a chain. We’re a family-owned center where the people who run this place genuinely care about the children who walk through the door every morning.

When parents ask us what makes us different, we always say the same thing: come see for yourself.

No brochure captures the feeling of watching your child light up on the playground, or hearing them talk about their teacher at the dinner table, or seeing them run through the front door in the morning like they actually want to be here.

That’s what we’re going for every day.
